Reporting to the Director, Global Program Development, the Gender Equality Specialist will ensure that Right To Play’s commitment towards gender equality is translated into concrete and measurable actions. They will provide technical support on gender equality, guide the mainstreaming of gender equality into program design and proposals, support with capacity development as well as gender equality policy, strategy, advocacy and research.
The Gender Equality Specialist will work closely with a diverse team of program specialists within the Global Program Development (GPD) team and will provide indirect support to country level Gender Focal Points and Gender Advisors, to ensure that gender equality is strengthened across all areas of program implementation.
The Gender Equality Specialist is based in Toronto with up to 15% of time travelling to Right To Play program countries.
Job Responsibility #1: Technical support and program design (40% of Time):
- Supports Right To Play HQ, regional and field teams with the mainstreaming of gender equality in program development and design, including proposals.
- Supports field teams with gender analysis throughout the project life cycle
- Supports the development of gender sensitive data collection tools and matrix
- Guides/advises countries in the development of tools to increase participation of girls or remove barrier to equal participation
- Supports the use of sport and play based methodology to promote positive masculinity and engage men and boys in social change processes
- Advises and supports International Programs in their efforts to strengthen partnerships with donor with a keen interest in supporting program on gender
- Ensures that program reporting captures challenges and successes around gender equality
Job Responsibility #2: Gender Equality Policy and Action Plan (20% of Time):
- Rolls out and disseminates the Gender Equality Policy and its tri-annual Action Plan
- Helps field teams, national offices and HQ implement their action plan
- In consultation with field offices, national offices and HQ, reviews the Gender Equality Policy every three years
Job Responsibility #3: Training and Capacity Building (15% of Time):
- Identifies training needs in gender focused areas and develops concrete capacity development plans
- Supports the preparation of/or dissemination of toolkits, training manuals and checklists for each focus area/sector, particularly for the Middle East and Asia, as well as Africa
- Supports training team in organizing workshops on relevant topics that focus on changing knowledge, attitudes and behavior towards women and girls, men and boys
- Supports with onboarding and refresher training on gender equality for all staff
Job Responsibility #4: Advocacy and Partnerships (15% of Time):
- Develops and strengthens core partnerships and networks with key stakeholders in the gender equality sector, including global/regional networks, and multi-lateral institutions to contribute to the gender equality policy dialogue
- Drives collective advocacy initiatives at the global level to advance key gender equality positions and contributes to policy papers, standards and tools in collaboration with networks globally
- Works in partnership with the Policy and Advocacy team to ensure alignment with prevailing external trends and innovation in the field of gender equality to ensure program teams across the organization adopt best practices
Job Responsibility #5: Research (10% of Time):
- Develops and strengthens core partnerships and networks with key universities, research institutions, and international NGOs to contribute to the broader gender equality research base
- Works with Child Protection, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, and Policy and Advocacy colleagues through a collaborative, cross-organizational process to inform a comprehensive program of research that advances the evidence base for gender equality and play
- Contributes to the development of core publications, articles, books and panels to share research results and practice
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (must have):
- Master’s Degree or equivalent in International Development Studies, Gender Studies, Education, or related discipline.
- 10 years of experience in dealing with issues of women’s rights and gender equality within public institutions, UN agencies and/or international system
- 10 years of working experience at the international level
- Hands-on experience in designing development projects and programs with a gender lens
- Experience with monitoring and evaluation of programs with a gender lens
- An understanding of humanitarian, development and gender issues that is particular to Right To Play project locations
- Familiarity with and experience in quantitative and qualitative participatory research methods
- Excellent writing, editing, and research skills
- Advanced Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Ability to work and experience in a dynamic, evolving, fast-paced international work environment
- Ability to work well under pressure, handling multiple demands that will be non-sequential
- Strong interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)
- Consistently communicates a compelling vision that generates excitement, enthusiasm and commitment to the group’s mission, purpose and goals
- Demonstrates ability to adapt, learn and change through self-awareness and management of emotions and ability to develop supportive and productive work relationships
- Identifies and pursues opportunities to build and strengthen partnerships and alliances that are mutually advantageous and support the strategic interests of Right To Play
- Applies culturally appropriate approaches to communicate and interact with the Right To Play team and diverse audiences
- Demonstrates a commitment to and understanding of children’s rights and protection
- Fluency in oral and written English
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS (an asset):
- Fluency in oral and written French or other language skills, particularly Portuguese, Mandarin, and/or Arabic
- Experience with remote leadership
- Ability to travel internationally is required
