10.00-10.50: Presentation on Development Initiatives’ Investments to End Poverty.

Development Initiatives’ 2013 report Investments to End Poverty is an important contribution to the debates around financing for development, a critical topic for the post-2015 agenda. Despite global poverty falling at an unprecedented rate, the report finds that economic growth alone will not be enough to end it altogether. Aid continues to have a critical role in financing development, but must be better targeted at where poverty exists- and used together with other resources to expedite the end of poverty. The presentation shares key findings, facts and infographics on financial resources available for development, including international private finance like FDI; remittances; and domestic resources. We also ‘unbundle aid’, looking at what ODA is actually made up of, and ask: how could aid be targeted more effectively at poverty eradication?

Presentation: 20 minutes plus Q&A time with Executive Directors of Development Initiatives, Tony German and Judith Randel

11.00-11.50: Presentation on Development Initiatives’ 2014 Global Humanitarian Assistance Report

How much is spent on humanitarian assistance? Is it enough? Where does it go? How does it get there and what is it spent on? Knowing who is spending what, where, and how is an essential first step in ensuring that resources can best meet the needs of people living in crises – yet this information is often hard to access. This presentation will present key trends, findings and infographics to help you answer these questions from the Global Humanitarian Assistance (GHA) Report 2014. The Development Initiatives’ GHA team uses unique methodologies to gather and analyse data to provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive picture of global humanitarian financing. The report looks back on an extraordinary year – in terms of both the scale of high-level crises and in the levels of response.

Presentation: 15 minutes plus Q&A time with Executive Directors of Development Initiatives, Tony German and Judith Randel

Having played an instrumental role in highlighting the concept, symptoms and effects of chronic poverty, Tony is now working to build consensus on the need for an MDG+ strategy to be put in place by 2010 and to agree the affordability and achievability of absolute poverty elimination by a specified date.
