CCIC participated in a roundtable discussion on advancing media freedom with civil society, Global Affairs Canada, and the Hon. Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs. The roundtable was held to seek input and guidance from civil society in advance of the upcoming Global Conference for Media Freedom in July 2019, which will be co-hosted by Canada and the United Kingdom.
CCIC raised concerns on behalf of the global sustainable development sector about the intersection between the decline in media freedom worldwide and broader constraints on civic space. As the civil society national focal point for the Community of Democracies, CCIC also noted the links between media freedom, human rights, and democratic development, and the role of free expression within Sustainable Development Goal 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions.
