DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS AND OUTREACH

USC Canada

USC Canada is looking for a creative and effective person to serve as Director of Communications and Outreach. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating, implementing and measuring the success of a strategic communications, marketing and outreach program designed to engage USC Canada’s target communities/audiences and lead them to measurable action.

The Director of Communications and Outreach will oversee a small team in our Ottawa office, participate in our Senior Management team, collaborate with colleagues in our field programs, policy, fundraising, and finance and administration teams in a dynamic workplace. This is an exciting time for USC Canada. Ten years ago we made the strategic decision to specialise, focusing our time, energy and resources on biodiversity conservation, ecological agriculture, and farmers’ rights at home and abroad – our “Seeds of Survival” program. Having established ourselves as a leader in these fields, we are now looking to build our profile and our support base in Canada, and are looking for an inspiring leader to help guide this process.

USC Canada’s Director of Communications and Outreach will:

  • Oversee the development, implementation, and operation of USC Canada’s Communications and Outreach program, including, but not limited to:
    • Oversight of our online presence including website and social media
    • Preparation and distribution of op-eds and organizational statements
    • Liaising with media
    • Managing consultants for preparation of print, electronic, and visual materials
    • Oversight of outreach events
    • Support for fundraising communications and events
  • Provide leadership to the Communications and Outreach team.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of systems and standards to ensure consistency of brand in all external communications and publications of USC Canada.
  • Ensure the successful planning, promotion and management of USC Canada events.
  • Collaborate with other teams (fundraising, policy, field programs) to develop content and messaging, and maximize the impact of the Communications and Outreach program.
  • Provide leadership within the Senior Management Team (SMT) in identification and strategic assessment of communications opportunities.
  • As part of the SMT, participate in the strategic leadership of the organization.
  • Participates in the meetings of the Board and Executive Committee of USC Canada.

 

Demonstrated Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to the values and mission of USC Canada.
  • A degree with a concentration in a relevant field (e.g. journalism, communications, marketing, public relations), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in communications; experience in journalism and the NGO community is an asset.
  • Strong research skills, including market research, evaluation and competitive analysis to inform smarter, strategic decisions.
  • Ability to measure the impact and effectiveness of communications, marketing, and outreach activities to ensure they deliver maximum value.
  • Demonstrated ability in writing for a diversity of audiences.
  • Experience working with or supplying information to curated media (online, radio, television and print press).
  • Comprehensive awareness of social media principles, tools, and practices.
  • Proven experience in collaborative leadership and personnel management.
  • Strategic thinking and strong organizational, analytical and financial management skills.
  • A well developed understanding of food sovereignty approaches, opportunities and challenges with specific knowledge related to ecological agriculture.
  • Solid analysis of major trends, issues and challenges related to international cooperation and North/South relations.
  • Solid computer skills including competence in web Content Management Systems, design programs and the GSuite environment.
  • Oral and written fluency in English and French (capacity to work in Spanish is an asset).

This is a full time position based in Ottawa. The incumbent must be available and willing to travel internationally and in Canada for up to two weeks a year.
