Program Coordinator                                                                              
Full-time, 6 month contract

PWS&D is the development, relief and refugee sponsorship agency of The Presbyterian Church in Canada with a budget of over $4 million in 2017.  PWS&D responds with partners overseas and Canadians here at home to help communities overcome poverty, recover from emergency situations and provide new futures for vulnerable people.  PWS&D works with churches and local organizations seeking to transform their communities by addressing the root causes of poverty and injustice, seeking peace and sustainable development through programs in the areas of food security, sustainable livelihoods, health, peace and human rights.

Position Tasks and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of PWS&D, the Program Coordinator will work as a member of the program team responsible for coordinating a portfolio of assigned programs with international partners.  The Program Coordinator is responsible for working with international partners - churches and community-based organizations - to ensure the effective planning, coordination and outcome of projects.  The Program Coordinator will manage and monitor programs and budgets with multiple partners.  Programs may include those co-funded by Global Affairs Canada as well as those involving PWS&D’s membership in the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB).


  • Coordinating programs with assigned overseas partners to support PWS&D’s mandate in sustainable development and disaster relief;
  • Effectively managing partnership relations for the successful outcome of projects;
  • Providing initiative and coordination for program development with partners in areas such as food security, livelihoods, education, women’s empowerment and disaster response programs;
  • Preparing all required reports for respective program areas;
  • Analyzing partner reports on the status and progress of programs, reporting relevant findings in appropriate formats to funding and ecumenical partners;
  • Planning and carrying out periodic evaluations or reviews of programs, including program monitoring and administration visits to program areas, and providing related recommendations to PWS&D management and committee;
  • Ensuring that all contractual requirements are respected between PWS&D and overseas partners;
  • Visiting partners or projects as directed by the Director where emergency relief, rehabilitation and long term development work is done;
  • Working with partners in improving and strengthening the local capacity to perform effectively in relief and development work;
  • Representing the organization at meetings of ecumenical and secular organizations related to the work of PWS&D, as directed by the Director;
  • Working collegially with PWS&D administration and communication staff on all aspects of PWS&D programs overseas;
  • Working collegially with other staff of the national church office, including International Ministries, Justice Ministries, Stewardship, and the WMS/AMS to ensure program efficiency and coherence;
  • Managing financial data related to the budget and reports for CFGB, Global Affairs Canada and PWS&D;
  • Maintaining and updating all files on partners and projects/programs;
  • Keeping abreast of developments in the field;
  • Providing support for any other duties assigned by the Director.


  • Recognized university degree in international development studies or equivalent in a related field;
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the field of international development and/or relief;
  • Work experience managing programs with international partners;
  • Experience in project management processes using the latest results-based management methodologies;
  • Knowledge of Global Affairs Canada requirements for proposal development and reporting;
  • Ability to analyze and prepare financial and narrative reports and ability to work with spreadsheets;
  • Experience and ability in monitoring and evaluation of projects;
  • Well organized, accurate and efficient, ability to work effectively in a team setting and independently;
  • Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills; ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders and meet deadlines;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Power Point) and ability to use new technologies;
  • Respect for the beliefs, structure, programs and polity of The Presbyterian Church in Canada;
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and experience;
  • Capacity to communicate effectively in Spanish (written and spoken) is an asset for this position, French an asset;
  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
