Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Fund Development, the Manager, Direct Response is responsible for driving performance of a successful direct response and monthly giving fundraising program that will support, leverage and contribute to the goals, objectives and priorities of Oxfam Canada. The Manager, Direct Response will provide leadership and direction to the Direct Response team, implementing a comprehensive, effective and sustainable results-driven fund development plan. Leading and mentoring a successful team to meet targets, the Manager will innovate to improve results, aligning resources to maximize return on investment. The Manager is responsible for developing, leading and executing comprehensive fundraising strategies to acquire, steward and retain one time gift and monthly donors, while working within the team and across the organization to ensure an integrated approach throughout the donor journey and across all channels. The manager is also responsible for managing multiple budgets, developing projections for future fundraising, and setting fundraising targets in consultation with the Director, Marketing and Fund Development. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: (This is not an exhaustive list of duties to be performed)

  • Plans, oversees and manages a comprehensive and integrated individual giving fund development plan to meet fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Marketing and Fund Development, helps to coordinate and integrate fundraising, where and as appropriate, into other public engagement initiatives
  • Oversees strategy for donor acquisition, stewardship and retention for Fund Development team.
  • Ensures strategies developed and implemented for various revenue streams and fundraising methods (all direct response vehicles, including direct mail, Face to Face, monthly giving, community events, corporate, e-philanthropy, symbolic and tribute gift programs, and any new individual giving initiatives).
  • Ensures the definition and implementation of a strategy for new partnerships and third party events
  • Lead on donor journey strategy, in collaboration with Integrated Marketing team, to ensure maximum revenue potential and increased retention rates among identified personas
  • Oversees the development and implementation of an integrated direct response program strategy that achieves revenue targets, maximizes net income and meets established performance metrics and objectives.
  • Responsible for the overseeing of special events and corporate giving program
  • Oversees the creative development and design of all direct response appeals
  • Oversees the administration of external contracts specified in the operational plan, including mailing houses, telemarketers, etc.
  • Manages external agencies in the delivery of individual giving programs by developing revenue and communications objectives, and providing strategic directions
  • Collaborate on the execution of potential annual signature events, including securing sponsorships
  • Lead and coordinate emergency appeals as part of the Emergency Response Team, as well as represent Oxfam Canada on related external committees
  • Drives performance against targets for defined revenue streams, tracking, monitoring and reporting on results and taking action as required to increase income.
  • Maintains an evaluation system for prescribed elements of the fund development plan and reports regularly on the effectiveness, efficiency, and return on investment of each of the revenue streams.
  • Works with appropriate fund development, marketing, communications, campaigns, policy, and program staff to identify and develop required marketing materials – case for support, stewardship reports, etc.
  • Oversees the identification of potential prospects and develops team strategies to solicit new business to increase net revenue
  • Oversees donor relations and participates in the development of proposals, follow-up, and reporting.
  • Oversees the performance of the Donor Relations Team, enhancing business processes that lead to improved financial outcomes.
  • Supports the Director, Marketing and Fund Development in the preparation of a detailed annual and operational plan for the Fund Development Team including setting team financial targets and managing team expense budgets
  • Contributes to the development, preparation and monitoring of the Department budget
  • Ensures all fundraising activities comply with all legislation and guidelines including those governing donor privacy, donor rights, CRA fundraising and charitable receipting regulations
  • Reviews and ensures Oxfam Canada's adherence to Imagine Canada's Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code (soon to be Standards Program)
  • Perform periodic audits in CRM to ensure best practice for data entry and receipting.
  • Liaises with Information Systems team in the management of the donor database, including relevant hardware and software, and ensures its accuracy and usefulness are evaluated and maintained on a regular basis
  • Tracks development progress and reporting regularly to the Director, Marketing and Fund Development.
  • Oversees the development and management of online giving campaigns, including peer to peer, workplace giving, tribute gifts, CanadaHelps, lead generation/conversion campaigns, and other initiatives as required

The Manager, Direct Response shall provide supervision to the Direct Response team.              This includes:

  • Lead, mentor, motivate and provide clear direction to the team.
  • Provide support to ensure the team’s ability to effectively and efficiently manage their responsibilities
  • Stay apprised of fundraising trends, and ensuring proper support, training & coaching of the team to maximize the achievement of their work objectives and their professional development;
  • Oversee the development of team and individual work plans and conducts performance evaluations for all team members
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to employees regarding expectations of performance and behaviour
  • Hold regularly scheduled team meetings to ensure work is properly planned and assigned, and to resolve operational issues
  • Fosters a positive team dynamic
  • The members of the Direct Response team include Fund Development Officer, Direct Response, Fund Development Officer, Events and Community Fundraising, and Donor Relations Assistants


  • University degree or post-secondary diploma or equivalent combination of education and direct related experience working in fund development in a not-for-profit organization
  • Minimum five (5) years fundraising experience with a minimum of three (3) years direct response fundraising experience, including the implementation of annual Direct Response and Individual Giving plans
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in a management  role or proven skills  leading and managing teams..
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising theory and practice, donations administration and management
  • Proven record of achievement leading direct response fundraising programs including direct mail, telefundraising, face to face and online giving
  • Demonstrated knowledge of acquisition, stewardship and conversion strategies for OTG and monthly donors
  • Strong people management skills with proven experience managing diverse  team
  • Knowledge, understanding and commitment to global justice, social change and gender equality
  • Positive track record in building and maintaining respectful and effective relationships with donors, senior managers and staff.
  • Maintains highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions with donors Excellent planning, analytical and budget management skills with ability to use judgment to problem solve and make decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in English required; including the ability to effectively and concisely communicate complex issues
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to global justice, social change, women’s rights and gender equality
  • Demonstrated ability to influence prospects by demonstrating how current programs align with their philanthropic priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize work and manage multiple projects with high efficiency and accuracy
  • Proven capacity to work in a self-directed manner as well as demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with other staff.
  • High proficiency using computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and fundraising databases (CRM/ERP);
  • Experience with working Salesforce is a preferred asset.
  • Possess excellent understanding of tax rules as applied to charitable giving and must keep abreast of  new legislation and Canada Revenue Agency rulings affecting gifts
  • Ability to travel periodically in Canada and to undertake international travel, sometimes in difficult circumstances.
