Canadian Network  on Corporate Accountability

Position: Communications Officer

Part-time position: 2 - 2.5 days per week **

Application deadline: March 29, 2018 (applications to be received thereafter until an ideal candidate is found)

Term: Contract is for one year, with possibility of extension based on funding

Start date: As soon as possible



The Canadian Network on Corporate Accountability brings together 34 organisations from across Canada that advocate for Canadian policy and law reform to ensure Canadian mining, oil and gas companies respect human rights and the environment throughout their global operations. The Communications Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing a broad communications and engagement strategy directed at the general public, CNCA members and Canadian decision-makers. She or he will be a highly driven self-starter who is able to work efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision, reporting directly to the CNCA’s Coordinator and closely collaborating with the CNCA Steering Committee and 35 members of the network.


Duties and responsibilities:

• Support the CNCA in the development of an overall communications strategy that furthers CNCA’s policy objectives

• Draft clear, concise and compelling materials for various audiences, including news releases and media kits, web content, educational and campaign materials, and a monthly communication to network members

• Proofread, edit and accurately transform texts written by policy experts into clear language for external communications

Maintain up-to-date outward facing communications, including on social media platforms.

• Increasing CNCA’s traditional and social media presence, including ongoing media relations

• Coordinate the organization’s media monitoring on issues relevant to the CNCA’s priorities

• Provide communications support to the network, as necessary


Qualifications and assets

Education: degree or diploma in journalism, communications or other relevant field is a strong asset

Minimum 2 years of experience in media relations, social media and/or web communications

Excellent English writing skills

• Similar capacity in French is highly desirable

• Demonstrated ability to drive communications strategies using web-based and social media platforms

• Ability to produce engaging web-specific and social media specific written and visual content

• Capacity to work in a self-directed manner, collaborate in a team, and to provide leadership, as required

• Strong interpersonal skills, tact, judgement and discretion

• Commitment to human rights, social and environmental justice

• Knowledge of Canadian and international policy processes, including in business and human rights, is an asset


Salary: $50,000 - $55,000/year, pro rated, commensurate with experience.

Hours: This is a part-time position, at 2 to 2.5 days (15 to 18.5 hours) per week. The number of hours for the position and work schedule will be determined in collaboration with the successful candidate prior to hiring.

Conditions: The post is based in Ottawa. The successful applicant must be eligible to work in Canada.
