SENIOR POLICY ADVISOR

Canadian Foodgrains Bank

Position:   SENIOR POLICY ADVISOR

Position Summary

The senior policy advisor is responsible for research and advocacy on humanitarian/food assistance policy issues, and helping to maintain and strengthen the relationship between the Foodgrains Bank and the Canadian government.
The senior policy advisor reports to the director of public policy, and will maintain regular dialogue with the food assistance technical advisor and other international program and member staff.
This position is located in Ottawa. Frequent domestic and occasional international travel is required.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Research and Analysis – Stay informed of recent developments in the field of humanitarian/ food assistance, and analyze these in light of the experience and perspectives of the Foodgrains Bank network. Develop, propose and advocate for changes to humanitarian/food assistance public policies that will improve the provision of humanitarian/food assistance. Prepare written briefs and publications for internal and external audiences.
  • Networking – Help maintain a high profile for the Foodgrains Bank through meetings with government officials and decision-makers, civil society and international organizations, and others engaged in humanitarian/food assistance policy dialogue and delivery. Facilitate relationships and information-sharing between these people and other Foodgrains Bank staff.
  • Coalition work – Contribute to and/or lead coalitions of organizations that work on humanitarian/food assistance issues, including CCIC’s humanitarian policy and advocacy group, the Trans-Atlantic Food Assistance Dialogue, and the Humanitarian Response Network.
  • Representation – Help maintain and strengthen the relationship between the Foodgrains Bank and the Canadian government, and represent and speak on behalf of the Foodgrains Bank in various fora.
  • Public Speaking – Make presentations to various audiences ranging from development professionals to parliamentarians to the general public to church audiences.
  • Other Tasks – Contribute to the broader work of the public policy and program departments as requested.

 

Qualifications:

Required:

    • Good knowledge of humanitarian assistance, food assistance, and food security
    • Proven interpersonal communication and networking skills
    • Good understanding of public policy processes
    • Ability to work independently and to make decisions, but must also be able to contribute positively to team work
    • Strong analytic and critical thinking skills
    • Written and oral English language fluency
    • Support for the underlying mission and Christian dimension of the Foodgrains Bank
    • Ability to articulate the relationship between a faith perspective and the work of the Foodgrains Bank
    • Availability for domestic and international travel
    • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

Preferred:

    • Previous work experience in a developing country
    • Experience in public policy work with government of Canada
    • French language fluency
