POSITION SUMMARY

The Canadian Council for International Co-operation (CCIC) hosts three regional working groups: the Africa-Canada Forum (ACF), the Americas Policy Group (APG) and the Asia-Pacific Working Group (APWG). These working groups bring together NGOs, churches, unions, academic networks and solidarity groups from across Canada that have a specific interest in key issues affecting the three regions. The purpose of each group is to strengthen the collective efforts of working group members through joint reflection, analysis, policy development and dialogue. Each working group has its own respective structure and Coordination Committees.

 

The Regional Working Group Officer is responsible for coordinating and convening the activities of the three working groups. He or she will work with members of each working group to implement the work plan developed with members of each respective Coordination Committee. Activities include monitoring and disseminating information on trends of interest in the region, coordinating the production of written materials on issues of interest to members, organizing policy dialogues, learning activities, and facilitating events and annual members meetings, including interaction with Global Affairs Canada and politicians and/or staff. The Officer is also responsible for participating in select CCIC coalition meetings and supporting member-led country sub-groups.

 

The Regional Working Group Officer will work closely with CCIC’s Senior Policy Analyst and Policy Officer as a member of the Policy Team at CCIC. In addition, the Officer will work alongside and supervise a Program Assistant, responsible for administrative and logistical working group support.

 

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Coordination and convening of the working groups:

  • Work with the three working groups, Coordination Committees and memberships to prepare and implement respective annual work plans;
  • Liaise regularly with members, including organizing regional meetings in Ottawa;
  • Develop shared priorities and areas of common interest between working groups and identify special joint projects;
  • Provide periodic updates to the working groups and report to CCIC as required for institutional reporting procedures;
  • Work with the committees on fundraising strategies for the working groups.  

 

2. Facilitation of member learning events:

  • Facilitate the main working groups’ activities, including convening regular meetings and hosting international guests and partners;
  • Under the guidance of the respective Coordinating Committees, organize in-person and virtual member events to enable member learning, networking, and policy dialogue and development;
  • Monitor Canadian government policies and programs on international development, humanitarian assistance, trade and human rights and keep the working groups informed of emerging issues, areas of interest, and events for strategic discussion.

 

3. Policy dialogue and development:

  • Support the design and implementation of advocacy strategies, in close collaboration with working group members and CCIC staff;
  • Ensure coherence with CCIC’s evolving policy agenda and priorities, including the 10 Point Agenda;
  • Provide regional input and recommendations to CCIC’s work and activities;
  • Facilitate working group relations with government, including facilitating dialogue and meetings with relevant staff at Global Affairs Canada and MPS and/or their staff;
  • Facilitate opportunities to contribute to relevant policy discussions with the non-governmental community and relevant Canadian and international institutions;
  • Coordinate and oversee external working group communications, including: the drafting of letters, policy statements, briefs, and reports, in collaboration with coalitions and CCIC;
  • Draft op-eds, press releases in collaboration with members and CCIC’s communications officer, as required.

 

4. Staff management and development

  • Supervise work done by the Regional Working Group Program Assistant;
  • Provide support and guidance to the Regional Working Group Program Assistant, including reviews of performance and support for professional development.

 

5. Other Organizational Tasks

  • Participate in the review and implementation of CCIC’s action plan and the Policy Team’s policy framework ;
  • Participate in the implementation of key CCIC events;
  • Contribute to CCIC internal and external communications, such as blogs, the annual report, reports to the board, donor reports, etc.;
  • Contribute to internal monitoring and evaluation systems;
  • Perform other duties identified as a priority by CCIC;
  • Oversee work of interns and volunteers, as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential:

  • University degree or equivalent in relevant field;
  • Bilingual in Canada’s two official languages (written and spoken);
  • Minimum of three years relevant work experience, preferably in the NGO sector, managing and working with networks or coalitions;
  • Experience managing support staff;
  • Knowledge of development and humanitarian issues;
  • Knowledge of Canada’s international policy processes;
  • Familiarity with the Canadian international CSO community, including some knowledge of international networks and issues in CSO partnership relations;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong organizational, facilitation, and coordination skills;
  • Proven analytical, writing and research skills;
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and work under pressure;
  • Capacity to work in a self-directed manner, collaborate in a team, and to seek advice as required;
  • Demonstrated tact and judgement, particularly in communications with government or parliamentarians;
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and to be flexible.

 

Desirable:

  • Regional knowledge and expertise;
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish, both spoken and written;
  • Experience overseeing work of interns and volunteers.
