Position Title:   Marketing & Communications Officer
Position Location:   Ottawa, Ontario
Status:   Full-time, fixed-term – 1 year contract
Reports to:   Manager, Marketing & Communications
Travel Requirement:   2-3 trips per year

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Manager, Marketing & Communications, the Marketing and Communications Officer is responsible for increasing and strengthening the profile of the Canadian Co-operative Association among the Canadian public, donors and program beneficiaries.  The Marketing & Communications Officer builds the capacity of headquarters, field staff, volunteers and partners to employ communications tools that support project success. Work priorities and activities will be determined by the strategic areas in the annual work plan and in consultation with the Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Plans content, gathers and prepares (translates and edits) approves and writes copy for our channels and publications (such as web pages, social media, brochures, annual reports, newsletters),
  • Manages and implements corporate marketing and PR strategy,
  • Implements a creative e-communications strategy and plan including content and design for web sites, online campaigns, e-philanthropy and social media,
  • Leads and implements ongoing web site design and development,
  • Advises on the effective use of social media tools to reach targeted audiences in order to maximize current and evolving trends in social media and online engagement,
  • Leads the development communication program and manages project-specific communications planning, execution, monitoring and reporting (both overseas and in Canada). This includes providing communication training to project partners and program managers to gather field stories and visual material for in-country and in-Canada communication purposes,
  • Provides support and material for development communications and fundraising strategies,
  • Prepares news releases and provides the media with information about CCA and its programs,
  • Prepares information for the Manager with recommendations on building a more positive brand, 
  • Preserves and promotes CCA’s brand and relationships among staff and volunteers,
  • Develops and implements creative and cutting-edge annual co-operative and international development awareness campaigns,
  • Coordinates efforts with design firms and consultants, when applicable,
  • Delivers communication training to CCA staff and volunteers.

Qualifications

  • 8-10 years’ experience working in the marketing and communications field,
  • Post-secondary marketing and/or communications degree/diploma in social and/or interactive media diploma or certificate an asset.

KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNICAL Skills

  • Advanced computer skills with proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and other programs,
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and experience with social media and other online engagement platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, blogs, webinars and e-mail sending tools; Experience using website content management systems,
  • Experience planning corporate communication plans and strategies,
  • Proven track record using participatory training methods with community groups and project stakeholders,
  • Excellent writing, editing and interpersonal communications skills,
  • Experience preparing persuasive presentations using a range of media and platforms,
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and time management skills,
  • Experience delivering marketing and communications training,
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team,
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workloads in a fast-paced environment,
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations,
  • Experience with development communications theory and practice in international development projects,
  • Experience with co-operative, not-for-profit or international development sectors.

Other Requirements
Proficiency in French, Spanish and/or other languages,
Cross cultural experience and sensitivity.
