CARE Canada is currently seeking a Country Director for our Country Office in Zimbabwe.
Reporting to VP-IOPs the Country Director provides effective leadership and management to CARE International (CI) staff and other stakeholders to undertake CARE International’s role in addressing poverty and injustice and providing humanitarian assistance when needed consistent with CI’s Vision, Mission and Focus.

The Country Director has overall responsibility and leadership to ensure the relevance, impact and cost-effectiveness of CARE International in the assigned country. S/he represents CI in the country, guiding a relevant program strategy development and implementation, ensuring effective humanitarian capacity and timely response, leading operational planning, and overseeing financial, operations and human resource management, including the safety and security of all CI staff and visitors.

The CD models and ensures systematic practice of CI values and new ways of working by fostering innovation, helping to build effective teams, coalitions and networks and encouraging on-going staff development to motivate and strengthen the organization’s resilience in the face of change. S/he promotes gender equality and diversity among CO staff and in programming. In doing so, s/he:

  • Ensures that CARE's role in the country is aligned with CARE’s global program strategy and continuously evolves to achieve the greatest impact and relevance in the operating context;
  • Positions CARE as a partner of choice and an influential voice in reducing poverty and social injustice;
  • Lead, promote and oversees mainstreaming of gender issues in the Country program policies, strategy and program development

Is this right for you? Here’s what we’re looking for:  

  • University degree in a relevant discipline
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in international development and humanitarian assistance
  • At least five years of successfully experience eat the senior management level in overseas postings, in contexts similar to Zimbabwe (experience in Zimbabwe or region is preferred)
  • Proven experience in leading multi-disciplinary and multinational teams
  • Solid understanding of financial and budget management, and of best practice programming (expertise by sector would be an asset)
  • Proven abilities in decision-making and problem-solving including in emergency contexts
  • Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to gender and diversity
  • Experience in security management
  • Flexibility and willingness to undertake local, regional, and international travel
  • Fluent in English (speaking, writing, and reading)
  • Advance knowledge of Excel and MS Word and Outlook

What would make you extraordinary?

  • Master’s degree in relevant discipline (Finance, Agriculture, Economics, Health or equivalent)
  • Fluent oral and written communication in local language
  • Extensive experience with USAID, DFID/UK Aid, EU DEVCO, ECHO (DIPECHO), UN and private sector partnerships and contracts
  • Familiarity with accounting packages such as SCALA, SUN or others
